About

The aim of this blog is to have a positive impact on student nurses, of all fields, during their time at the University of Cumbria. Written by experienced student nurses, we will share ideas about how to get the most out of University and placement and hopefully encourage and assist other students to grow and develop into compassionate, empathetic and resilient nurses.

We will reflect on our own experiences in practice, some of the challenges that were faced and how these were overcome resulting in a positive outcome for our patients and ourselves. We will also provide hints and tips on caring for emotional wellbeing, how to manage academic work and the practical aspects of placement whilst progressing through the years of study.

The blog came to be developed after we explored the effects of studying for a nursing degree on a students wellbeing. Nursing is a busy and often demanding degree course and students can sometimes feel overwhelmed by all they have to do.  This project highlights the positive impact of peer support during University, especially from students who have “been there”.

The site is curated by the University of Cumbria based Student Wellbeing Ambassadors (SWA), a student led health care initiative, promoting student and public wellbeing. The Student Wellbeing Ambassadors aim to support students and staff to achieve positive wellbeing within University and Healthcare settings, act as champions of student and public health, develop innovation projects to promote wellbeing and highlight the importance of self-care using the 5 Ways to Wellbeing (NHS Choices, 2016).

The University of Cumbria is the second University, EVER, to launch the Student Wellbeing Ambassador project. To apply to be an SWA you must be studying for a Healthcare degree within the north west of England.
